18.05.2010 - TAROT
While one part of music-photocalypse has already covered the first festival (METALFEST in Austria) for this year and is busy with reworking them, the other one has been busy in Helsinki, covering a great show of TAROT.

Finland is very well known for its never-ending stream of metal bands: good and bad, some with a relatively short life-span and some become history. Tarot is a very good example of this: I cannot remember a time when that band wasn’t legendary and massive. If we look at it that way, Hietala brothers are just as symbolical for the Finnish metal as the granite titans at the Central Railway Station for the city of Helsinki – they are inseparable.

08.04.2010 - HATEBREED - Hardcore for the masses - interview with Jamey Jasta in Hellcity
"Born to bleed fighting to succeed
Built to endure what this world throws at me"

That´s what Jamey Jasta is shouting in the song "In Ashes They Shall Reap" - lines that get stuck in your head immediately and make everybody in the audience scream along. Victoria got the chance to talk to the Hatebreed fronter Jamey Jasta in Helsinki.
Check out what he had to say!

"Hatebreed is one of the few hardcore bands which managed to become a sort of mainstream for the wide heavy music audience. Due to their experiments with classic thrash metal elements Hatebreed became the forefathers of oh-so-popular nowadays metalcore, however the guys are still able to keep the image of extreme American “muthafuckas”. It's not by far the first time for Hatebreed to visit Finland but the hunger of their fans rose from intolerable to crazy since the last visit in summer. You could tell that watching the mass of people who came to the show at Helsinki Old Ice Hall that day; they were ready to give their best and make the show unforgettable for the band and of course for themselves."

07.04.2010 - Blog update!
Yeah, seems we´re on a roll right now. Here´s another update for you - in the blog section this time.

"It might be a little too early for a new blog update, but as I was listening to Alice in Chains’ first album “Facelift” today, I realized I should pay honour to the two legendary musicians deceased on the 5th of April within 8 years difference. I am speaking about Kurt Cobain (1994) and Layne Staley (2002), may they rest in peace. Even though the cause of their deaths is said to be different, it is known to everyone that both of them were quite serious drug addicts." Continue reading

11.03.2010 - ULVER, Nosturi, Helsinki - report + gallery
Fifteen years of existence and not a single live show. That’s Ulver for you – a cult Norwegian band that had started in 1994 by playing black metal and now evolved into something so avant-garde, that I don’t want to risk putting it in borders of any certain music genre. If you listen through the band’s discography up to day, you will be quite amazed by the metamorphose their music had undergone. After releasing their 7th full length album in 2007 “Shadows of The Sun”, two years later Ulver finally decided to come out of the shadows and into the spotlight. They played their first live show in May 2009 in Lillehammer, Norway. The shadows dissolved and the band went on a European tour.

Helsinki was one of the lucky destinations on the list and welcomed Ulver for two nights in a row. The first show in Nosturi on the 26th of February was completely sold out. We went to see the second show next day – the last gig of the tour - and the club was once again quite full. The audience consisted of a rather wide variety of people: from your usual metalheads to cyber-goths to electro-bright-coloured-hair dudes to men in suits. What kind of a band mustit be to unite all these people from completely different worlds?

09.03.2010 - HELSINKI METAL MEETING 2010, Kaapelitehdas, Helsinki - report + extensive gallery
… previously known as Finnish Metal Expo. Call it all you want, but for two days in February it was the place to be for all heavy music lovers and industry people. The biggest disadvantage of FME is the event being held in winter and indoors. As much as we miss that summer-festival-euphoria during the year, this winter was even more unbearable than before (-20 C at night). Yet nothing could stop us from going there, so we wrapped ourselves in furs, hopped our polar bears and rode to Kaapelitehdas (The Cable Factory) to join the crowd of 5000 invading the factory during these two days.

25.02.2010 - LACUNA COIL at Nosturi, Helsinki - gig report
Heavy music requires one to have a pair of solid balls. Maybe that’s why women performing in this genre are so rare, and this makes them more valuable. It has always surprised me to hear girls say “I don’t like female vocals”. A woman fronting a metal band deserves all the respect simply for the fact of being out there if nothing else. Christina Scabbia from Italian band Lacuna Coil is one of the best examples that we – girls – can kick it just as hard. I had to go and express my admiration to this gorgeous woman and great singer at the band’s concert in Nosturi, Helsinki on February the 15th.
